Port de Gavarnie
Having proceeded for several kms until our track changed to a path, then the path changed to a field, we discovered that we had gone the wrong way!
The valley we had unwittingly ascended, lead to Vignemale (3298m), and not Gavarnie!
We re-traced our steps, great mountain biking single track, to find the right way back to France.
Now, on the right route... A very difficult ascent, most of this pushing the bicycle.
Until finally we reach the summit, hungry, at 16:30. Several cars parked at the summit and incredulous hikers look at what we'd done.
Let the descent into France begin! This was a long descent towards Luz St. Sauveur with plenty of opportunities taken to overtake cars and coaches. Maximum speed reached 49mph (nearly 80kmh).
Breathtaking views of the Vallee des Especieres as we descend.
After food, the next Col is Tourmalet.
